Among these graceful rolling hills (Mt. Townsend) is the home of the Kowma and Nukuma tribes. Their traditional culture is especially rich. At Maliwe and Tongijamb there are magnificent Haus Tambarans (spirit house) in which the secret initiation ceremonies still take place. These ceremonies are based on yena, minja and nokwi rituals which are held after yam harvest. |

Angoram is the administrative township of the Lower Sepik area. We offer day trips from Wewak to Angoram return including three hours canoe trip to Kambramba and Moim villages. Kambaramba is an interesting village because most of the time it is under water and life can be difficult especially gardening and burying their dead. Moim is a large village. Although it is very quiet it can become alive with many forms of traditional singsings. On the way to Angoram you will pass many villages and schools. Also you will drive through part of the Sepik plains that stretches nearly the entire length of the Sepik River. On the hilltops you will notice large gaps, these gaps are used to set up nets for catching flying foxes or large bats for meat. There are other interesting features in the Lower Sepik area, please contact an operator in the area for longer stays. |

The Maprik area is famous for its unique sky scraper Haus Tambaran (spirit house) where traditional ceremonies and rituals are held. The Papua New Guinea Parliament House is the replica of the haus tambarans of the Sepik Region. |
